The Texas Science & Engineering Festival is one of our biggest events of the year and we plan on making this one extra special. This coming Saturday and Sunday (November 5th and 6th) we will be joining dozens of other science and education organizations at this free festival to bring the fun and beauty of science to young and old alike.

This year, in addition to the Mobile Planetarium, we will be setting up a variety of mini science exhibits to provide festival-goers an experience in line with our goal of constructing Austin's first science museum, planetarium and technology center. See the Magic Planet, the Space Telescope Science Institute's Visions of the Universe display and many more mini-exhibits. Then enter the Discovery Dome Mobile Planetarium for a glimpse of the stars. Second grade was endless worksheets. They had a worksheet for every math operation there ever was, plus those that were not in the book! I finished those like hot fries. One after the other. I remember that we got stuck with a sub for the greater part of the year because the teacher had a baby, and wow, was it worksheet time then!

To this day, I feel like I am the official greeter of the Human Race! In first grade, I had to learn the English language and I just remember this exercise being done over and over again. 'The Rabbit jumped over the fence.' We spelled and said that sentence. It created some impact for me as the first instance of rote learning. They put words together in a sentence for the first time. The easiest parts were the greetings. Later, we learned idioms. In my mind I was immediately encouraging myself to have conversations with my classmates. That's why people like me at parties and gatherings so much...I am a great conversationalist and can chat for hours on end on interesting topics. My classmates found me studious and also engaging and witty.

At five, I entered Kinder-garten. The teacher noticed something fuzzy and notified the school nurse who said that I had head lice! Nonsense! We had a pet turtle. And I drank fruit punch and slept most of the day. Sure we had these colored abacuses, and counting buttons was one of the number exercises. Really? Counting buttons?

Some of those abacus wires were crooked and I thought, this is the best the school could offer? I always liked to get the beads in the middle where the wire drooped. It was in the middle of being counted. Considered...but yet counted.

I started to think if this is the way that people were. That some people were considered but not counted. And I also began to think of who does the counting.

Who considers and counts who is worthy in society? Deep thoughts for a five year old.

At the age of three, I landed by plane to the land of California, suburban California to be exact. Didn't know squat except that I was in a new land. I wanted to understand the horizon of the place. It seemed to be be drier than what I was used to.

I had a set of family friends named Jason and Kevin: they were my first friends, count 'em yellow people! They were the L's (last name omitted) and they were orthodontist kids. I had no idea. They were friends. I had my first van ride on a plastic van and did not like the tires. They were plastic, and they were molded and getting uneven. There was a pool though. And around then was when I got my first horse ride from a neighbor's ranch. I almost slipped off! I took all that for granted. Now I am foolish to think that.

Jason, Kevin, and I took turns at bossing each other around. As kids, that was fun.
Not really bossing, we just functioned well as a unit.

My nanny family in Taiwan ROC was the bomb. I remember many foods and drinks and taking cold water baths in this tub. Their patron was this artistic eccentric who wanted to be a major author, and last I heard he published his book. I am going to have to see what he wrote.

They used to make fun of me as a kid and I remember putting on these glasses that were way too big for my face. Turned out to be that author's reading glasses!

Boy did I feel scholarly!

Couldn't see a thing though.

I went to department stores and had rides on this plastic airplane that was so cool. Coin operated of course. This department store was ten stories, and was called the President's Department Store. Too bad it burned down in a fire. Good thing that they rebuilt it. The playground was always on the top floor.

I was born prematurely, at least three months prematurely, and hence my small weight and height. It was a miracle that nothing was wrong either with my respiratory system or with infections of any kind.

I was not sickly as a youth, and had a stellar immune system. I never seemed to get sick. I was always having a yen for the optimistic and this is the way that I thought about health.

I was a precocious youth, getting my hands on all manner of learning as quickly and broadly as I could. I had an uncle who gave me a set of mathematics cards in a box, that covered the concepts of math in easy to understand sequences. It was a mix of enrichment and story problems. I wish I had that box today to show those that I tutor that I went through this.

So first a bit of thanks for everybody in my life. Parents, teachers, students, bothersome people. Helpful people. All the above contributed in one way or another. And that is what I want to communicate. That life is too short. But also that life is infinitely long in that moment. And there are so many moments of discovery. I am a magnet of personality and popularity, yes, and I couldn't quite understand it. Since the very beginning, I have always had a great personality.

I was born in Taiwan, ROC, to hardworking parents who wanted a better life. And sacrifice they did to get me here. I, in my thirties, did not quite understand why they jumped through all those hoops, but now I did.

And life, real life, if we want to call it that, is the best and the worst. Let me attempt to sum it up here in this memoir.

Well now how do I start? My life has been eventful and miraculous at the same time. People say that I am too young to start on my memoirs but I respectfully disagree.

Varied stuff has been happening, enough to write a book. And many invites and friends have said the same. So with no further delay, I am going to start today.

What does a writer in postmodern America do and how does he position his manuscript? All I know is that everything I write do or say will be placed under scrutiny. Mainly by people that I don't know. So I'll allow for that. If you want to know something, the best way to get the best answer is to ask me. So this memoir is an effort to address those claims and also as a record of memory for my life as it goes on in the present perfect.
